Summary and conclusion
Having not approached this test entirely without prejudice based on my rather negative experiences with QNAP’s operating system in the past, I have to say that I am quite satisfied overall with the current software version. The design is always a matter of taste, but in terms of functions, it offers everything that can be expected from such a device.

However, it didn’t run completely smoothly, as I had installed four 2.5″ SATA SSDs as a test, which I have also used in other NAS test reports. However, I couldn’t use these because the “World Wide Name” of all four SSDs was apparently identical. I think the manufacturer Apacer is to blame, but so far no device has complained about this.

The only other thing I’ve noticed about the hardware is that the power supply makes a slight coil whirring noise when idle. However, when I close the door of my server cabinet, it is no longer audible. However, I will chalk up the somewhat scarce 4GB of RAM to the fact that without any other services, around 45% is already occupied during normal operation. This device is sold as network storage and not as a server, but it would be better to have 8GB available as standard, especially as there is only one RAM slot. The fact that things like AES-128-GMAC for accelerated SMB signing are available under SMB 3.1.1 shows once again that the target group is small companies looking for a high-performance network drive.

The very modular structure of the software with various individual packages, which can be installed by the user if required, is basically quite good. This allows you to decide for yourself exactly what you need or don’t need. However, I have noticed several times that installing additional apps can sometimes take a while.
At the time of testing, the tested model costs around 710 euros, which makes it a good deal cheaper than the direct competitor from Synology, which is not even equipped with 10 Gigabit ex works. The market for 19″ NAS is very manageable, which makes the TS-435XeU one of the cheapest offers in this niche. Newcomers such as Ubiquiti are now also getting involved, but still have a lot of catching up to do in terms of software. And thanks to the really shallow installation depth, it even fits into many network cabinets – it doesn’t have to be a large server cabinet.
The test sample was provided by QNAP without obligation. There was and is no influence on the tests and results. There was also no compensation for expenses and no obligation to publish.
