Welcome to the world of real sound – without hocus-pocus, without acoustic fortune-telling. The Fosi Audio K7 is made for a very special species: the audiophile gamer. Someone who doesn’t value artificial 3D sound reinforcement and doesn’t believe that they can hear their opponent before their mother has even reached puberty. It’s better to leave faith to the churches, here only what’s actually on the table counts: a massive DAC that doesn’t conjure things up, but simply delivers clean, precise sound – just as it should.
Or to put it in more serious terms: The Fosi Audio K7 is a compact but powerful headphone amplifier with an integrated DAC that is aimed at a very specific target group: gaming music lovers who value pure, unadulterated sound. The manufacturer has a clear intention – away from artificially inflated 3D sound and towards a clean, precise reproduction that is suitable for both immersive gaming sessions and audiophile music listening. Instead of gimmickry, the focus here is on sound fidelity to ensure authentic and detailed reproduction.
The Fosi Audio K7 remains largely true to the philosophy of pure, unadulterated sound, but the company didn’t want to leave the ball-busting fun listeners with a slightly better-filled wallet completely without gimmicks. That’s why there is at least a switchable EQ and the obligatory Bluetooth – for all those who occasionally want to have their brains physically massaged by booming grenade impacts. Provided, of course, that you use halfway decent headphones and not some €20 gaming headphones from the TEMU dungeon. Because with the output power on offer, you can catapult such candidates beyond their best-before date faster than you’d like.
At around 155 euros via Kickstarter, the Fosi Audio K7 is in a price range that seems fair for what it offers. Sure, there are cheaper solutions – but they are often as exciting in terms of sound as a calculator with speakers. For a solid DAC/headphone amplifier aimed at more audiophile gamers whose listening habits have not yet been brutally deflowered and where what is on offer doesn’t just sound like marketing buzzwords, this is certainly not an extreme amount. So if you don’t want an artificially inflated sound, but clean performance with an optional fun factor, you’re unlikely to blow your budget here. Of course, there are also shadows that I have to write about, but that’s quite a few and also quite specific, so it won’t affect everyone. So it’s worth reading.
Scope of delivery
Let’s get it on and off. The Fosi Audio K7 comes with everything you need for immediate operation. The device itself is made of CNC-milled aluminum with a matt black finish. A 12V/2A mains adapter with a European plug is included for the power supply. A USB-A to USB-C cable provides the digital connection to computers or other audio sources.
As the amplifier has Bluetooth 5.0, a suitable antenna is also included in the scope of delivery. It enables wireless use with codecs such as SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD and aptX LL. A 3.5 mm splitter adapter is included for gamers who use a headset with separate connections for microphone and headphones. An instruction manual is also included to make setup easier. This means that almost everything is included to get the K7 up and running straight away without having to purchase additional accessories. Unless you want to use the optical or cinch input. Then, unfortunately, you have to reach into your own cable box. Although I don’t find that tragic, because in most cases such supplied cables should then rot away in the corner of the waste bin because you already have them anyway.
Technical data
Before we delve into the technical details, I would like to emphasize that I will refrain from using excessive technical jargon in order to convey the information clearly and comprehensibly. The Fosi Audio K7 is a compact but powerful DAC and headphone amplifier equipped with high-quality and interesting components. Inside we can found an AKM AK4493S DAC chip, which ensures high-resolution audio processing with low distortion. It is supported by the XMOS XU208 USB controller, which enables fast digital audio processing. The OPA1612 operational amplifiers and the TPA6120 headphone amplifiers are used to amplify the audio signal, which together ensure precise and powerful sound reproduction. I’ll provide more measurements on this later, also with a complete teardown, but first things first…
The technical specifications of the K7 are quite impressive, if not groundbreaking. But for the price, it really does have an excellent Nutri-Score. The 4.4 mm balanced headphone output delivers an output of 2100 mW per channel at 32 ohms, while the 3.5 mm single-ended output offers 600 mW per channel at 32 ohms. Both outputs are characterized by a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of over 121 dB and low distortion (THD N) of less than 0.0005 %. The frequency response extends linearly from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, which enables a detailed and unadulterated sound reproduction. Of course, I’ll check the performance.
The K7 supports a variety of inputs, including USB-C, coaxial, optical and Bluetooth 5.0. The latter enables wireless connections with support for high-quality codecs such as aptX HD and aptX LL, which is beneficial for both music lovers and gamers. The Fosi Audio K7 therefore offers impressive technical features for anyone who values high-quality and flexible audio playback. And for those who love tables, I have of course included them. Apparently you can’t do without them.
