The Be Quiet! Dark Rock 5 impresses with an all-black, matt design, a fine ceramic coating and a magnetic top cover that neatly closes the cooler. The appearance is elegant, technical and unobtrusive at the same time. In typical Be Quiet! style.
The heat sink of the Be Quiet! Dark Rock 5 consists of a densely packed aluminum fin block with around twelve fins per inch, which are mounted on six 6 mm copper heatpipes. The black ceramic particle coating is not just for looks, but also improves heat radiation, according to the manufacturer. The asymmetrical design ensures compatibility with high RAM modules without compromising cooling performance. The fins are precisely processed, the transitions to the heatpipes are cleanly soldered and the finish conveys a high-quality overall impression.
The fan installed in the Dark Rock 5 is a Silent Wings 4 with a diameter of 120 millimeters, which is already familiar from other models from the manufacturer. Be Quiet! relies on a hydrodynamic bearing with a high pressure stability factor, which ensures even airflow even with a dense fin structure. The motor control is PWM-controlled and thus enables precise adjustment of the speed to the thermal requirements of the system. In practical operation, the excellent running smoothness is particularly noticeable. Even at higher speeds, the noise profile remains free of disturbing bearing or drive noise. The fan produces a very even, deep sound that is barely perceptible even in an open test environment. Another striking feature is the optimized blade geometry, which is designed for high static pressure without swirling the airflow.
The base plate of the Be Quiet! Dark Rock 5 is made of nickel-plated copper, measuring 41.2 x 43.2 mm, and has a clean, finely polished surface. This ensures an even contact surface to the CPU and enables efficient heat transfer from the processor die to the six 6 mm heatpipes. In contrast to cheaper solutions, Be Quiet! does not rely on a direct-touch construction here, but on a continuous copper base that distributes thermal loads evenly and minimizes hotspots. As you would expect from Be Quiet!, the workmanship is of the highest quality. Soldering points and transitions between the base plate and heatpipes are precisely executed, which indicates controlled production. The nickel plating protects the copper from oxidation and also gives the contact surface a high scratch resistance.
