Summary
The GPU based on the GB205 is manufactured using the 5 nm process at TSMC and offers a solid computing basis with 6144 CUDA cores and moderate clock rates. Thanks to the Blackwell architecture, users primarily benefit from AI-based optimization functions such as DLSS 4, which bring visible advantages in suitable applications. The classic raster performance, on the other hand, is more at the level of the RTX 4070 Super, which is due to the comparatively narrow memory connection and the moderate raw performance. The boost behavior is largely controlled by the internal VFE logic and the individual CVB curves of each chip, which can result in differences between specimens of the same series.
The power supply has been sensibly structured and follows a clear division into NVVDD, MSVDD and FBVDD. This segmentation allows differentiated regulation of the voltages for the GPU core, memory and frame buffer. The choice to rely purely on MLCC capacitors is an understandable step in terms of signal quality and stability. The DrMOS components from Alpha & Omega integrate switching elements and gate drivers in a space-saving manner, while a dedicated supervisor chip ensures precise power monitoring. The circuit board design is well thought out and the workmanship is of a high quality, although sub-optimal placement of the thermal relief pad on the backplate could still be observed.
The Tri-Frozr 4 cooling system impresses with its quiet and efficient operation. The use of a copper heat sink with nickel coating and structured fins enables even heat distribution. The fans remain comparatively slow and quiet even under load, without jeopardizing thermal stability. The card achieves stable GPU and memory temperatures even under continuous load. The OEM PTM pad on the GPU ensures good heat conduction and reduced mechanical stress. In thermally demanding scenarios, the cooling system is resilient, whereby the housing ventilation should be taken into account with regard to the three-slot design.
Conclusion
The MSI GeForce RTX 5070 Gaming Trio is technically well implemented and offers an overall balanced solution for users with a focus on WQHD gaming or AI-accelerated applications for no less than €729 (current street price). The power consumption remains controllable, the noise level is low and the cooling performance is sufficient even for demanding scenarios. However, the still limited memory expansion of 12 GB GDDR7 must be viewed critically. Even though this may be sufficient for the majority of current games, the first titles are already showing that in UHD and with memory-intensive use – such as high-resolution textures or complex ray tracing – reserves may be lacking.
However, this decision lies with NVIDIA and not with MSI, which gets the most out of the GPU with its custom design. In the long term, however, the question remains as to whether this card configuration will still be viable in two to three years’ time.
The test sample was provided to me on loan by MSI. However, there was no influence on the test and no obligation to publish it.
