As with Cyberpunk 2077, NVIDIA’s paradigm shift is based on advanced features such as DLSS 4 and Frame Generation, which boost frame rates through advanced algorithms. But a closer look at games like Alan Wake 2 shows that this claim relies heavily on software support. Without AI support, the RTX 5070 lags well behind the RTX 4090 in classic raster and ray tracing calculations. Only with upscaling and frame generation techniques activated can it achieve high frame rates in optimized scenarios. However, this does not increase the actual computing power of the hardware, but rather optimizes the visual result through algorithmic additions. As a result, benchmarks with DLSS make the RTX 5070 look significantly better than its raw performance would suggest.
Jensen’s marketing promise somehow reminds me of a work of architecture that looks monumental from a certain angle, but reveals its limitations on closer inspection. While AI features in games like Alan Wake 2 or Cyberpunk 2077 enable impressive improvements, the question remains whether this strategy will be perceived as real progress by users in the long term or whether it will be devalued as a clever illusion. Ultimately, the RTX 5070 is more dependent on software support than ever before – a paradigm shift that is unlikely to be received equally positively by all gamers. However, it simply seems to have become necessary, as raster performance cannot be increased endlessly.

Due to the large amount of data for better clarity, I have listed the Ada and Backwell cards separately this time, as I did for Cyberpunk 2077, but the axis scaling is the same in each case:

Individual metrics such as percentile frame time, variances, latencies, power consumption and efficiency are crucial for the precise evaluation of graphics cards, for example in Cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing. Percentile frame times, such as the 99th or 95th percentile, show performance drops that disrupt gameplay, while low and constant frame times ensure a stable gaming experience. High variances indicate micro-stutters, even at high average frame rates.
Latencies affect reactivity and are optimized by technologies such as DLSS frame and multi-frame generation, which increase frame rates and minimize input lag. Power consumption increases significantly with active ray tracing and UHD resolution, but achieves better efficiency with DLSS 3 and 4 as GPU load is reduced. The efficiency, measured in watts per frame, shows how well a GPU converts energy into performance. NVIDIA cards like the RTX 5080 benefit from optimized Tensor Cores that enable high performance with impressive energy efficiency. These metrics provide a comprehensive picture of playability and system stability, especially in titles like Alan Wake 2, and go far beyond averages.

Differences between the rendering methods
The comparison of the frame time curve and power consumption in Alan Wake 2 provides valuable insights into GPU performance under different rendering methods. At native resolution, the frame-time curve shows significant fluctuations and high power consumption, as the GPU carries the entire rendering load without support from AI technologies. Particularly with ray tracing and pathtracing, load peaks lead to unstable frame rates and micro-stutters, which highlights the weaknesses of native rendering in complex scenarios.
Frame generation (FG) reduces the render load, as AI-generated frames reduce the load on the GPU. This smoothes the frame-time curve and reduces load peaks, although demanding scenes can still cause temporary load peaks. Multi-frame generation (MFG) with DLSS 4 enhances these effects by generating multiple frames from one image, which further increases frame rate stability. At the same time, short-term load peaks occur in dynamic scenes, as the calculation of several frames per image is very computationally intensive.
