The FSP NP5 Black is aimed at users who are looking for a compact, discreetly designed CPU cooler with a good price-performance ratio. The cooler is based on a classic single-tower design and, according to the manufacturer, should offer respectable cooling performance despite its comparatively small size. FSP promises simple installation, full RAM compatibility and an attractive appearance in an all-black design. I took a closer look at whether the cooler also fulfills these claims in practice.
Packaging and scope of delivery
As soon as you unpack the FSP NP5 Black, you notice that FSP has opted for simple but functional packaging. The box is a matt black and gray, with discreet product illustrations and the most important technical data on the back. No flashy marketing bluster, no exaggerated performance promises – the design conveys the impression that the focus is on the product itself rather than the packaging.
n the inside, everything is clean and tidy. The cooler is completely embedded in a precisely fitting foam mold, which reliably protects it from damage during transport. This solution is effective and ensures that neither fins nor fans slip or are damaged during shipping. However, FSP relies exclusively on foam here, which provides optimum protection but is not the most sustainable choice from an ecological point of view. Alternative packaging made of molded cardboard or recycled cardboard would have been more environmentally friendly and would have been even more in keeping with the otherwise modern overall impression of the product. The fan is already pre-assembled so that the cooler can be taken straight out of the packaging and installed almost immediately. A detail that not only saves time, but also minimizes the risk of accidentally getting caught on the sensitive fins during installation.
The scope of delivery of the FSP NP5 Black is clearly arranged but well thought out. In addition to the pre-assembled cooler and fan, FSP includes all the mounting material for current Intel and AMD sockets. A particularly positive feature is that the spacers and screws differ in color depending on the socket type. For example, the components for AMD sockets are in a different color than those for Intel, which makes it much easier to identify them during installation. This small but clever detail solution prevents confusion and saves time, especially if you are assembling the system in its installed state and do not want to check each individual part against the instructions first. The lettering in the instructions is also clear and easy to understand, and the color coding is a useful addition. The supplied thermal paste is also available in sufficient quantities to enable the first installation to be carried out without any problems. Overall, the range of accessories leaves a well thought-out and high-quality impression, which shows that FSP has also thought of the small but important details.
Assembly and installation
Installing the fan in the FSP NP5 Black is just as straightforward as the rest of the assembly process. The fan is supplied pre-assembled so that no separate fastening is required before installation. If you still want to remove it, this can be done quickly and without tools thanks to the practical metal clips. The existing AMD backplate is reused for installation on an AM5 socket. First remove the two standard plastic brackets from the mainboard. The supplied spacers are then placed on the threaded bolts of the backplate before the metal mounting frame of the cooler is placed and fixed in position. The cooler itself is then fitted and tightened evenly with the spring screws to ensure a clean and even contact pressure. The pre-assembled fan sits firmly and with low vibration, but can also be easily removed if necessary, for example for cleaning or replacement. All in all, the fan mounting on the FSP NP5 Black is a practical solution and just as well thought out as the rest of the cooler.
