Aquatuning takes over EK distribution in DACH – A boost for the water cooling market?

What looks like a simple distribution announcement is actually a strategic maneuver with reverberations: Aquatuning GmbH will take over the distribution of EK products from LM TEK in Germany, Austria and Switzerland from August 13, 2025. Sounds harmless? Well, let’s shed some light on the subject…

  1. On August 13, 2025, Aquatuning took over the distribution of LM TEK’s EK products for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This shifts responsibility for the distribution of the EK brand in the DACH region to a wholesaler that has had one of the most extensive ranges for DIY PC and server water cooling for years and already has manufacturers such as Aquacomputer, Alphacool, Watercool and Black ICE in its portfolio. According to the announcement, the announced cooperation aims to stabilize availability, shorten delivery times and serve the increasing market demand more reliably, addressing system integrators, specialist retailers, e-tailers and end customers alike.

For the channel, the reorganization initially means bundling warehousing, procurement and RMA processing under one roof, which can reduce operational complexity for resellers. Aquatuning has established logistics processes and broad B2B coverage in the region, so that improved delivery capability is plausible in the short term, especially for high-demand EK components such as CPU and GPU coolers, radiators, pump units, fittings and matching peripherals. At the same time, there will be a new distribution of tasks in the chain of responsibility, as LM TEK will remain the brand and rights holder or the parent partner of EK, while Aquatuning will now act as the executing distributor. This gives rise to questions that are relevant to the market and which are not answered in the announcement, such as who will define the pricing policy in future, how warranty processing will be formally assigned and to what extent service level agreements for RMA and spare parts supply will be binding.

In the enthusiast segment, the EK brand traditionally stands for a broad portfolio of custom loop components and complete solutions, and market expectations are focused on a consistent spare parts supply and a reliable roadmap for sockets and card revisions in addition to the pure product range. The change in distribution can open up opportunities here, for example through centralized demand planning and coordinated purchasing cycles, which experience has shown to smooth out delivery waves and cushion seasonality in Europe. It remains to be seen whether the fragmented availability of individual EK items in retail will actually be resolved in the long term, whether price jumps can be avoided through additional margins in the chain and whether the lead times for warranty cases will be measurably shortened. For specialist retailers who also see Aquatuning as a competitor in the end customer business, the question of channel equity also arises, as a distributor with its own strong retail presence must clearly separate the role conflicts in terms of processes so that smaller resellers benefit from the extended availability and are not given lower priority in procurement.

From LM TEK’s point of view, handing over operational distribution to a partner deeply rooted in the DACH region is a logical step if its own role is primarily seen as brand management, manufacturer management and contract framework. However, the decision shifts expectations and liability peaks to the region, as service quality and delivery reliability are directly attributed to Aquatuning by the market, while LM TEK and EK remain responsible for product strategy, technical documentation and the availability of new revisions. For end customers, this division is only advantageous if clear responsibilities are communicated, if RMA channels are transparent and if spare parts and accessories remain reliably available throughout the entire product life cycle.

The question of price and portfolio coverage becomes operationally relevant. Aquatuning already carries competing brands and thus addresses all common form factors, radiator thicknesses and thread standards; additional EK coverage makes the range more complete, but also increases the need for internal coordination in terms of stock priorities and campaign planning. For EK, the presence at a central distribution hub is a lever for making new products available across the board at market launch, while at the same time it remains to be seen whether the increased quantities can be translated into special colors, limited editions and specific OEM derivations without delays. In the end, the decisive factor will be delivery stability in the usual bottlenecks, i.e. new CPU sockets, changing GPU PCB layouts and demanded sealing materials and acrylic or acetal spare parts, which have repeatedly been in short supply throughout the industry in the past.

For the B2B channel, which the announcement explicitly addresses, the announcement is a signal of consolidation. System houses can benefit from predictable quotas and standardized contact persons for larger projects, provided that forecasting and call-off models are contractually secured and underpinned by realistic delivery windows. For ambitious end users and modders, the relevance is more direct, as they expect not only availability but also consistent batch quality, clear spare parts allocation according to revision status and reliable documentation that enables rapid identification and replacement in the event of a fault. Whether the structure that has now been chosen meets these requirements better than the previous setup with LM TEK as the primary distribution instance will be demonstrated by measurable key figures such as stock range, backorder quota and RMA throughput times, which are not quantified in the communication and which only become visible during ongoing operations.

The partnership can therefore be seen as a pragmatic reorganization of EK distribution in the DACH region, with clear advantages in terms of reach and logistics, but also with open points regarding price transparency, role separation between distribution and retail as well as the sustainably stable supply of spare parts and revisions. Aquatuning is thus positioning itself more strongly as a central point of contact for high-quality water cooling solutions, LM TEK retains responsibility for the brand and manufacturer management, while EK is obliged to plan its product and revision strategy in such a way that the now bundled distribution service actually results in noticeably better market availability. For the market, the announcement is therefore less an end point than a starting signal that will be measured by clear process indicators, reliable delivery commitments and a transparent service chain.
