Gigabyte is focusing on more variety in the new iteration of AMD chipsets and is launching some stylish boards for the increasingly popular color white with the ICE models. The design cleverly plays with black contrasting elements on the mainboard, which results in a very appealing look and can therefore be integrated well into most cases. This saves expensive accessory cables for the power supply unit and an overly focused switch to white for the remaining components. At first glance, the WIFI7 version of the B850 EAGLE ICE offers impressive features and, at under €200, is priced more in the entry-level segment. The built-in B850 – which largely corresponds to the pre-series B650 – provides a solid basis for the majority of users and should meet the requirements in terms of connectivity and connectivity in most cases. With its rather aggressive price – compared to the competition – the board is an inexpensive alternative and, in addition to its stylish design, tidy layout and WIFI7, it also offers a number of convenient functions.
However, you have to do without any kind of RGB or lighting on this motherboard. Even if the EAGLE lettering on the VRM cover appears illuminated in the pictures, this is merely an applied lettering. You can like that too. In the following, we will take a closer look at whether Gigabyte ultimately makes good use of the available resources of the B850 and the quality is right, or whether the red pencil dominated the development and the board is a dazzler.
Unboxing and accessories
The motherboard comes in an unspectacular but stylishly designed packaging in matt white, which reflects the color scheme on the board well. The clear presentation of the board, including its main features, is very commendable thanks to the useful illustrations on the back. You can see the board layout and the available connections at a glance. The I/O hub is also shown transparently. Of course, the usual marketing slogans are not missing here either. Gigabyte is well known for its creative naming of features that are actually quite simple. Nevertheless, the manufacturer must be expressly praised for the design of the OVP. All the relevant information for the buyer can be seen at a glance. Buyers in stationary retail stores can find the relevant information on the board and the layout clearly and quickly.
The accessories for the mainboard are meager for the price range. There is neither a fully-fledged, printed manual nor any particularly relevant accessories apart from the absolutely necessary ones. All in all, the board comes with two screws for the M2 NVME mounting, the flexibly attachable WIFI7 antenna, some spacers made of soft plastic to place under the mainboard, a SATA cable in a matching color, and finally the Gigabyte G-Connector. The latter serves to simplify the connection of the case’s front connectors and is a very practical accessory. It makes it possible to conveniently prepare the delicate cables for the front connections, e.g. for the HDD LED or the power button, and finally to connect them all together to the headers of the board. The author has already come to appreciate this small accessory on other Gigabyte mainboards and finds the solution extremely practical and useful. A simple penny article that makes life much easier when assembling. The marketing department can also let off steam here with a clear conscience.
The orientation of the WIFI antenna can be varied, but it does not make a particularly high-quality impression and looks a little fragile. It should not be subjected to any particular stress and it is strongly recommended that it is removed when transporting the computer. The antenna’s rotating mechanism does not make a particularly high-quality impression either. You should probably not change the orientation of the antenna too often. A poor installation guide rounds off the accessories.
