Components and assembly
Here, too, there is some cardboard and a little plastic inside, nothing more.
When it comes to the components used on the SSD, the G5 is only equipped on one side.
Then I’ll take off the front sticker.
Two memory modules, a controller, a DRAM module at the front and some odds and ends. The modules say Kingston on them, but they are supposed to be 3D NAND TLC memory from Koxia. This means that the SSD uses 218-layer 3D TLC NAND, combined with the SM2508 controller and LPDDR4 DRAM.
The Silicon Motion SM2508 is a modern PCIe 5.0 x 4 NVMe controller that works according to the NVMe 2.0 standard. It is manufactured using the efficient 6 nm process and therefore generates less heat than many competing solutions such as the Phison E26. With eight NAND channels, it enables high parallelism and achieves sequential transfer rates of up to 14.8 GB/s for reading and 14.0 GB/s for writing.
It relies on external LPDDR4/LPDDR4X DRAM to manage the flash mapping tables, which improves performance, especially for random accesses. In practice, it delivers up to 2.2 million IOPS and offers integrated end-to-end data protection with LDPC-ECC. It also supports modern features such as Microsoft DirectStorage, AES-256 encryption and TCG Opal 2.0. Despite its high performance, the SM2508 is considered to be relatively energy-efficient: it requires very little power when idle, while it reaches around nine watts under full load at large capacities.
